Population Map of Russia

As of January 1, 2021, according to Rosstat estimates, Russia had 146,171,015 permanent residents, ranking ninth in the world by population size. The average population density is 8.54 people/km².

The population is distributed extremely unevenly: 68.53% of Russians live in the European part of Russia, which accounts for 20.82% of the total territory. Among federal subjects, the highest population density is recorded in Moscow — 4,941.45 people/km², while the lowest is in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug — 0.07 people/km².

The urban population stands at 74.95%, and the rural population is 25.44%. As of January 1, 2020, 173 cities had a population of over 100,000 people, of which 15 cities had over one million residents, and 38 had over half a million.

In August 2021, Yandex published a study titled "What is this place called? Populated places on the map of Russia", conducted using data from Yandex Maps. It examines the names of settlements — identical names, the longest, the shortest, etc. The study included a link to data on the analyzed settlements, which also contained population counts. Since Yandex's study did not specifically focus on population distribution, I decided to visualize this population dataset.
